3 Things to Consider Before Moving into a Retirement Community

A retirement village is an excellent option if you are looking to transition from living completely independently, but you do not feel ready to move into a care home. Retirement villages can provide you with a great way to meet new people in an environment in which you are supported but can still enjoy a certain level of independence. However, before you move into a retirement community it is important that you consider the following things:

Your Financial Situation

One of the primary things you need to do before looking into retirement communities is your current financial situation. Because of the high quality living retirement communities provide, they are typically very expensive. Unless you are extremely wealthy, it is likely you will need to sell your existing home in order to buy a place within a retirement community. If you aren't a homeowner or if you do not wish to sell your property, you will need to look at alternative forms of finance. One possible solution is to take out a loan to cover the initial cost of your move, which you can pay back in instalments. It is also that you consider how your financial situation will change in the future. It may be a good idea to visit a financial advisor.

Your Lifestyle

A significant part of any retirement community is lifestyle. Before deciding to move into a community, you should consider which elements of your lifestyle you enjoy and would like to continue in your new life. For example, if personal fitness plays an important part of your life, you should seek out a retirement community which has a gym, pool and sports centre.

Your Health

Before you enter a retirement community, you may need to undergo a health assessment. During this assessment, a doctor will conduct checks to establish your current health levels. This is important because a retirement community is not designed to provide the same calibre of healthcare as a care home. If you have any severe medical conditions which require a high level of care such as severe mobility issues, neurological conditions or cancer, a retirement community may not be the best place for you.

If you would like to find out more about moving into a retirement community, you should contact a company which specialises in retirement and assisted living. A member of staff will be happy to offer you further help and assistance.
